Dag in de Branding, Den Haag

How can a musical score play an active role in the performance? What impact does it have on the way we experience sound, and how does sound in its turn influence our experience of space? These questions are the starting point for Light Trace, a collective dialogue between Catchpenny composers Yael Levy, Nikos Kokolakis and Sascha Thiele, guest composers Þráinn Hjálmarsson and Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir, visual artist Tivon Rice, and the musicians of the Catchpenny Ensemble.

Zizos is a new work by Meriç Artaç (Istanbul, 1990), artist-in-residence at Festival Dag in de Branding. Introducing a three-headed character named Zizos, the piece is inspired by the phenomenon of multiple personality disorder.

Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2019

We had two amazing weeks at Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2019 in Utrecht as ensemble in residence there! We worked with Gaudeamus Award nominees Nicholas Morrish, Scott Rubin and Stefan Maier, as well as Jacques Zafra from Ulysses Network, presenting/premiering their works at the amazing spaces of Nikolaikerk and at Theater Kikker! During the opening of the festival at the foyer of Tivoli we had the opportunity to premier a collaborative composition of Nikos Kokolakis, Yael Levy, Sascha Thiele and the musicians of Catchpenny Ensemble reflecting Mariska De Groot’s installation Klein Woestijn – a project that was developed through Stichting de Vrolijkheid with the help of the residents of azc Rijswijk at the Vrolijk Museum Rijswijk, where Mariska was artist in residence the past summer. During the last day of Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2019 and together with a piece by Theodore Shin Kim, Catchpenny Ensemble performed Light Trace, a collaborative project with Nikos Kokolakis, Yael Levy, Sascha Thiele, Tivon Rice as well as Thrainn Hjalmarsson and Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir for which we worked in several phases for the past year.

Light Trace – Try-out concert – Korzo Theater

“What is a musical score and how can it become an active part of a performance? How does it alter the way we experience sound in space and how does sound change the way we experience the ‘space’ of a musical score?”

Catchpenny Ensemble, together with guest composers and visual artists, aims to approach these questions by creating Light Trace, a concert-length interdisciplinary work which explores the performance space with an interactive, image based score.

Light Trace is an immersive and inclusive experience. One is drawn to an inner world of visual and sonic landscapes where lights, video and sounds meet playfully, in a delicate game of revealing and hiding musical mechanisms and networks through a magical and intellectual journey.
